Who Should Consider Discernment Counseling?

Discernment counseling is for couples who are at a tipping point and not on the same page about working on the relationship. Common signs include talk of separation, a recent revelation of infidelity, emotional cutoff by one partner, or persistent gridlock about fundamental issues like parenting, intimacy, or trust. One partner may have already met with a divorce attorney. The other may be researching therapists and sending website links with a knot in their stomach. That mismatch often derails couples therapy or marriage counseling before it starts. This is exactly the territory where discernment counseling works well.

Good discernment counseling candidates share three conditions. First, there is enough safety to meet together without intimidation. Second, at least one partner is unsure about the future. Third, both are willing to attend a few sessions focused on decision making. The process helps even when both partners are exhausted. The key to discernment counseling is willingness to speak plainly and listen briefly, not needing to fix everything now.

If there is active domestic violence, ongoing coercive control, or a court order limiting contact, discernment counseling is not the right setting. If either partner is firmly decided on separation and is only attending to appease others, the process shifts toward respectful closure rather than deliberation. If both partners are equally motivated to improve the relationship, standard couples therapy or marriage counseling is a better use of time and money.

Discernment counseling operates on defined roles. Knowing those roles up front reduces disappointment and keeps the conversation purposeful. The counselor is the steward of the process. Each partner brings a distinct stance that the process names without judgment.
